PayPal is expanding the reach of its peer-to-peer payments platform Venmo, enabling users to send and receive money internationally for the first time through a new integration with PayPal’s global network.
The move allows Venmo users to transact with PayPal’s hundreds of millions of customers across more than 90 markets, significantly increasing the app’s addressable user base.
It marks the largest expansion of Venmo since its launch and positions the service within one of the world’s largest peer-to-peer payment ecosystems.
The rollout aims to address the longstanding challenge of fragmentation between platforms in the payments space. Until now, users have often needed to switch between apps or rely on bank details to send money internationally. By contrast, the new functionality enables transfers using just a phone number, removing the need for account or routing information.
Diego Scotti, general manager, consumer group at PayPal, said: "Venmo and PayPal have each become a trusted part of how people send and receive money."
"By bringing these two ecosystems together, we're making it seamless for Venmo and PayPal users to pay one another without friction or borders. It's about meeting people where they are and delivering simple, secure ways to move money in the moments that matter most, no matter what your preferred app is."
The update also reflects changing consumer behavior, particularly among younger users. According to survey data commissioned by Venmo, 59% of payment app users said they would stop using other platforms if a single app enabled seamless global transfers.
Therefore, the expansion is likely to resonate with younger demographics, who are more frequent users of international peer-to-peer payments. For these users, the ability to send money abroad using a familiar app mirrors domestic use cases such as splitting bills or sharing costs.
