Regional and community banks are under unprecedented pressure to modernize. Today’s customer expectations demand speed, seamless digital convenience, and real-time access to finances. Meanwhile, shifting regulatory requirements, fierce competition from global institutions and fintechs, and the relentless pace of innovation are transforming the financial landscape.
Yet, despite these challenges, many community banks invest in new technology stacks prematurely, without a clear understanding of what they need those solutions to achieve. The result is costly, complex transformation programs that often miss the mark, failing to deliver sustainable value or meaningful competitive advantage.
Challenges holding back modernization
A common mistake is viewing technology upgrades as isolated projects rather than integral parts of a broader strategic journey. Without clear alignment to core business objectives and the right skills to capitalize on new innovations, investments risk becoming wasted efforts.
Outdated systems, such as older core banking or payment platforms, unsupported operating systems and obsolete network hardware, are often seen as the primary obstacle. However, the real challenge lies in the failure to strategically leverage technology to support agility, innovation and customer-centric growth. Maintaining fragmented, siloed solutions inflates costs, hampers innovation and detracts from strategic alignment.
Migrating operations to modern platforms may sometimes give bank leaders pause, but maintaining aging systems comes with far greater costs. This includes increased vulnerabilities, slower response times and a failure to meet evolving customer expectations. As a result, banks find themselves caught between rushing AI implementation to keep pace and struggling to break free from the inertia of outdated systems. With lengthy manual processes still underpinning 31% of banks’ onboarding workflows, community banks cannot afford to stand still.
To summarize the challenges of holding back on modernization are resulting in:
- Increasing total cost of ownership: Fragmented and duplicate infrastructure, and bespoke builds drive complexity, high total cost of ownership and technical debt
- Operational complexity resulting from complex back-office workflows and increased complexity to leverage AI to drive efficiencies
- Slows down innovation to create differentiated end-customer propositions and experiences; and ensures a forward-compatible business model
- Drives up operational risk resulting from security vulnerabilities, regulatory compliance, resilience and business continuity
Approaching modernization as a continuous discipline
True modernization begins with the understanding that technology is a means to an end, not the goal itself. Banks must first define the value they want to deliver, whether it’s enhancing customer experience, developing new revenue streams or boosting operational resilience and efficiency, and align their efforts accordingly. Most importantly, enablers such as AI, Cloud, and microservices architecture must be directly tied to intentional business outcomes to ensure tangible results.
Evaluating key strengths and weaknesses within the organization and addressing those intentionally towards the business modernization outcomes is essential. For example, 33% of organizations cite a lack of AI skills and expertise as a major challenge holding back their initiatives. For community banks operating with constrained budgets and resources, overhauling outdated systems without a clear vision for scalable success increases the risk of costly missteps, especially when competing against fintech disruptors and global institutions with more flexible infrastructure.
Regularly assessing technology stacks, adopting new solutions, and evolving processes should align with the bank’s core identity and long-term objectives.
A critical enabler of this approach is the adoption of APIs and open architecture platforms, ensuring solutions can be layered over time. These allow banks to:
- Incrementally improve services: APIs support modular updates, enabling the deployment of new features without disruptive system overhauls.
- Facilitate rapid integration: open architectures make it straightforward to adopt new verticals like healthcare or property management, helping banks expand into new markets swiftly.
- Create an ecosystem of innovation: APIs foster interoperability between disparate systems and third-party providers, accelerating innovation and keeping banks ahead of competitors.
By breaking down silos through open architecture, banks can enable real-time data sharing across internal and external systems. This will allow swift responses to changing customer needs and market dynamics, all while avoiding the costs and risks associated with legacy systems.
In an era of rapid innovation, approaching modernization as a continuous discipline will differentiate community banks as forward-thinking institutions prepared for long-term growth.
Looking ahead
Fostering a culture of innovation and agility is essential to sustaining this ongoing journey. So is setting the right strategic balance around the build vs. buy approach and partnerships. With a deliberate approach and clear strategy, community banks can remain competitive, resilient and better positioned to seize on emerging opportunities in a rapidly changing landscape.
Too often, payment modernization is treated solely as a technology decision. The banks that realize true, lasting value are those that flip this mindset. Whether it’s faster time-to-market, enhanced operational resilience or revenue growth, defining the goal first ensures that instruments will deliver meaningful impact.
