European Payments Initiative Expands in Key Country

The European Payments Initiative received key support this week by adding five Belgian Banks to its list.

The EPI is a bank initiative to compete with credit card companies such as Capital One, Visa, and Mastercard, all United States-based corporations.

The five banks that are joining are Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and VDK Bank. In a joint statement, the banks stated they will launch EPI's digital wallet Wero in early 2026.

The key countries that have adopted the EPI model are France, Germany, and Belgium. However, the initiative has also lost bank members as well.

From wallet architecture and custody models to vendor strategy and regulatory considerations, we'll discuss the foundational choices that can accelerate innovation — or create friction down the road.

Whether you're evaluating a new offering or scaling an existing program, you'll leave with a practical framework for understanding how digital asset infrastructure impacts business outcomes.
