AI Takes Center Stage in JP Morgan’s Commercial Bank Overhaul

JP Morgan Chase is placing AI and data at the center of its commercial and investment bank (CIB) strategy with the appointment of Guy Halamish as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Halamish, who has spent more than 20 years at the firm, takes on a role that diverges from the traditional COO remit focused on cost management and process efficiency.

Instead, he will focus on embedding AI and advanced analytics into the bank’s core operations, working alongside the heads of the CIB’s four principal businesses to ensure initiatives translate directly into commercial impact.

Central to the reorganization is a new data operating model in which each major business — global banking, markets, payments, and securities services — will appoint its own chief data and analytics officer. These executives will report both to Halamish and their respective business heads, ensuring AI and analytics initiatives are embedded in day-to-day operations rather than siloed within technology functions.

The team will oversee the full lifecycle of data and AI, from governance and quality improvements to building shared platforms and delivering production-ready use cases.

Recent hires, such as Zachery Anderson from NatWest as chief data and analytics officer for payments, highlight the bank’s commitment to attracting talent capable of pushing AI innovation in financial services.

Early transformation efforts will target high-impact workflows such as credit processing and client onboarding, where AI can reduce friction, accelerate turnaround times, and improve accuracy. The restructuring builds on the groundwork of Chief Data & Analytics Officer Teresa Heitsenrether, whose team has been expanding since 2023.

Longer-term, the CIB aims to expand the use of AI agents and advanced models, building on its proprietary generative AI platform, LLM Suite.
